Building A Monster..!

As I watched the results of the Maharashtra elections pouring in I felt a sense of sadness; not because the Congress had won, but that she had used one of her old tricks, that of building a monster to fight her battles.

Today as the Americans look at the Taliban with dread, as they hear and read about the horrors these fundamentalists cum terrorists sadistically impose on their people, maybe they need to know it was they themselves who helped create, nurture and feed this inhuman mass of sabre rattling, head slicing, flesh flogging bunch of bullies years ago, to counter the Soviets who’d invaded Afghanistan.

“How do we defeat the Soviets?”

“Bomb them sir!”

“No we can’t do that!”

“Create a monster!”

“Yeah! Yeah! Good idea!”

The Taliban threw out the commies and there was rejoicing on the streets till they heard a growl and realized the very people who’d liberated them were far worse then those they’d thrown out. I guess you’ve all heard by now about the historic Buddha statues these people broke down? Maybe you haven’t heard about how they broke the will of a hardy nation; book in one hand, a sword in the other and now they do the same to Pakistan.

And then the Americans came back to fight the very monster they had created and the battle is far from over.

Today in Maharashtra there is dancing on the streets, those same streets which a few months ago saw taxi drivers from UP and Bihar being bloodied.

And the monster will soon want its pound of flesh. Police chiefs will phone their ministers, “Sir a mob is out beating poor, innocent people, shall I go and stop them?”

“No!”

“Sir, shops are being shut and buses stoned!”

“It’s okay, leave them alone!”

“Principals of schools are having their faces blackened for refusing admission!”

“Let it be!”

Monsters grow, and grow and reach a stage when they can’t be controlled, you can find that in every history book, but and it’s a big but, monsters can also be given the boot. “Okay Mr Monster your job is over! Goodbye!”

But that’s never done, because like fools we always think we need the monster to fight another day, and the monster grows and grows! If you be wondering who this monster is, watch the streets of Mumbai and when they’re splattered with red you’ll guess..!
